The individual vs. what our society needs

The other day, I wrote about the Huberman Lab podcast that featured Morgan Housel as they dove into what we truly long for as humans. This weekend, I finished the episode and am wrapped up in one of their final points.

At the individual level, as we talked about last week, we are most likely to find joy and “wealth” when we have a calm mind, fit body, and house full of love. Personally, this feels like a solid explanation of what I seek.

However, our macro environment level actually thrives on people feeling inadequate and working hard to push past that. The example Huberman and Housel gave was the Great Depression. Nearly every single human during the Great Depression woke up in a frenzy thinking “I have to figure out (insert challenge) today or my life as I know it will be in shambles.” This period of chaos drove innovation and technological advancement.

Obviously, the individual and macro levels that Huberman & Housel layout contradict one another. That’s been on my mind. I believe we need humans seeking a calm mind, fit body, and house full of love while also caring deeply about the world beyond themselves. Much easier said than done, but this is the conclusion I’m at (for now).
